Oakland is among the most diverse cities in America – yet in many ways we are paralyzed from celebrating the beauty of our diversity because of fear, cultural disconnections, and an overarching sense of fragmentation. What would it be like to embrace our differences and start to discover our common roots? The Renew Project wants to find out, so we are joining Shalom of Oakland in October for a series of experiments in loving our neighbor.
It’s a very simple premise: invite a diverse group of friends, people who would normally not associate with one another, and share meals together once a week for a month. Breaking bread is a universal human experience, and one by which we can begin re-thinking our ideas about love, friendship and community.
Look for updates from these experiments at our blog over the coming weeks. If you are interested in participating in this or future experiments, please let us know!
